Reciting Fatiha after/with the Imam

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

Does anyone know whether we are meant to recite the Fatiha with the Imam in Jama'a3 of after him. I have heard some people recite it after him when he says Ameen, while others just say Ameen and say it suffices or other read it with him.

What is the ruling on this? From the Hanbali point of view, but I would be interested to see from all iA.

in regards to your query, shaikh taqi uthmani writes in his book dars tirmidhi under the chapter of fatihah khalf al-imam:


imam ahmed and imam malik have the same opinion in this matter. they both say that its not wajib in the loud salah.. he then explains it by saying that 3 opinions have been narrated from the both of them
1: it is makruh
2:it is permissable (mubah)
3: it is preferable

so thats why you hear mixed views from different ppl...

secondly with regards to the silent salah there are also 3 different opinions mentioned:
1:wajib
2:mustahab
3:mubah (permissable)


as for the rest of the imams

imam abu hanifah says
it is makruh tahreemi to recite fatihah behind the imam in both loud and silent salahs.

imam shafi:
it is wajib to read fatihah behind he imam in both loud and silent salah..
this is one place where the imams differ to both extremes.
