Of course, no doubt about that. Tawhid and Shirk must be learnt in depth especially in this era where the idols which are being worshipped are not statues but have taken other forms.
If a person is upon Shirk then his Tawhid is null and void regardless if he utters the kalimat shahadah, prays and fasts.
If a person is upon Tawhid, then he is not upon shirk.
Shirk and Tawhid are antonyms, and can never coincide together in a person. Either a person is upon Tawhid or he is upon Shirk.

The first pillar of Tawhid is to Reject Taghut. A Taghut is a person who has ascribed to himself any of the rights of Allah (i.e. creation, legislation, invocation, sacrifice, claiming to know the unseen etc). A tree, stone, a person (such as Isa (as)) can be made a taghut by people by directing to them any of the rights of Allah. So know that every Taghut is not a mushrik.
So since the first pillar of Tawhid is rejection of Taghut, it becomes obligatory upon every individual to learn these different forms of taghut today in order to reject it. Or else the person will be upon shirk.
If one has not rejected Taghut, he has not believed in Allah.
