For my Teacher…

Even if these words are never read by the one to whom they are addressed

I thank you for everything you have given me

By the will of Allah

I feel these words coursing through my veins

The need to reveal them almost overwhelming in its intensity

I know no other way to show this love

Save by prayer of which one can never be aware

So I say nothing, though my heart longs to share these thoughts

The emotions beating through my heart unable to literate

That which cannot be understood on a page, but only known through realization

The Ilm flows from your lips yet I take no more than a drop that falls

Yet even that lingering touch changes my soul, causing me to reflect

Understanding a little deeper, seeing a littler clearer, listening with greater care

Something remaining from each encounter; love, or peace, or something else;

A troubled soul yearning to repent; thoughts unable to fade; and energy or fatigue

Or a restless calm left in its place; filled with coldness or a silent beauty

Remembering what I have done, with shame, loss, and sorrow

Or longing for what I hope to do… and longing for a nearness that cannot be conceived

Those moments rare yet never leaving my memory; glimpses of something pure

Calling to my soul, stirring a love for Allah within, a ripple shifting without

My mind hurts and my eyes feel like sleeping as I write, yet a few moments ago

I felt surrounded with light, and thinking of the mercy to all mankind (s.a.w)

For then I was immersed in your presence, your firm conviction in Allah

And frank yet chivalrous manner exposing a little of your trust in the One who Created you

With so much love and patience for your students, guiding us firmly along the path of light

Yet even what I have just written sounds false to my ears, while everything you teach

Comes truly from the heart… You claim we are the means by which you shall enter Jannah

Whilst in reality we are nothing- yet still we strive to draw closer to Allah, hearts awakened

As you speak. I yearn to teach after changing so much after being with you for so long

And so I thank you for everything you have given me, by the will of Allah

For my Teacher… even if these words are never read by the one to whom they are addressed.
