Guilty…

I’m there when he’s lying awake at night

Tortured by a flash of darkness and a scream of pain

I’m there when he’s trying to wash away the filth

The burning echo of that memory driving him insane

I’m there when his past refuses to leave, unable to deny

Tearing out is hair in guilt, sobbing, “Why O why O why?”

I’m there when he’s gazing through the bars, unable to escape his deeds

All he wants is for it all to end, for peace he asks, for forgiveness he pleads

Suffocated by remorse, as the tears never cease to fall,

All illusions he’d ever had shattered by that fatal call...

I’m there when he’s crying, crying himself to sleep

As he feels the pain burn, sees the blood fall, unable to cry out as he weeps

I’m there when he’s imprisoned, locked up as his youth wastes away

I’m there when he’s haunted by my mother’s eyes, with nothing left to say

I’m there when he recalls how he spent his freedom in vain

Clubbing, latest gossip, ‘a little’ TV, and drinking himself insane

Drunk driving down a dark road at nine o clock at night

Skidding on a patch of ice with a screech of tyres and a scream of fright

Never saw the teenaged girl stepping out as she froze in fear

Every moment of that nightmare etched impossibly clear

Never had any regrets never thought to seek out God to pray

Never wondered why he’d been created, never realised he’d been led astray

He didn’t know what he believed in, but he wanted to change his way

He knew he’d spent his life in waste… and with him stole mine away.

I was thirteen years old and never thought I was going to die

I-pod blasting in my ears when I saw the metal crashing with a startled cry

Just like that everything went black; hopes smashed, dreams shattered, hearts broken

I’m there with the guy who got a life sentence for drunk driving and manslaughter

A young guy caught doing the wrong thing at the wrong time and on the wrong place

And now I’ll never leave him; he’ll always be haunted by the girl that he killed

Trapped in a cell and condemned for a crime that he can never forgive himself for

Can never heal the wound he scarred in the family of his victim

Their broken tears like a blade of accusation and despair slicing through his heart

Now he realises his mistakes but it’s too late to do anything about it…

Yeah, this is about a prisoner- especially since he’ll never be freed from his guilt

I’m always there, at the back of his mind, with nothing to say but silence.

I remember an advert i heard a long time ago do do with something like this, so i just decided to go with the flow and write about a prisoner who's actually committed a crime, albeit one he didn't intend.

I've been writing about global issues; mainly about injustice and wrongul wars and imprisonment, so i decided to take a different route with this piece and get the message across saying that what's been forbidden by Allah is ike that for a reason, and that one mistake will destroy lives.
