When we hear about some trragedy, or a heart-moving, scary story of the Sahaba/Prophets/Salaf, or hear an emotional nasheed, i suppose some of us reflect on death...

but then again, like you sadi, we rarely reflect, and, rarer still, act upon our reflections. We realise we could die at any t ime, but still go ahead weither sinning or wasting time.

But do we put ourselves in the shoes of the dead person or do we look on from afar?

Do we think that i'm the person whose soul malakul mawt pulls out like cotton wool through thorns? That i'm the dead person being put in that hole, and that when the people leave my soul will be put back in my body and the angels munkar and nakeer will be there to question me? And a single shot from the whip they carry will make me scream that every creature apart from man and jinn will hear me? That my cheeks will be cut and pulled the my nape? That my head will be crushed by a boulder repeatedly? etc

These are the realities of the punishments in the aakhirah, but it's as if we don't believe it that's why we persist in sinning.

Yaa Allaah forgive us for our multitude of sins, for verily You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

Ameen..

When you say it like that, and the few times I've gotten thinking to that stage with frightening imagery, I want to get up and run from my thoughts but there's no where to run to, except that I cover up them thoughts and don't let them surface...

And so it reminds me of this;

حَتَّى إِذَا جَاء أَحَدَهُمُ الْمَوْتُ قَالَ رَبِّ ارْجِعُونِ

Then how come even though we way think of death, it doesn't affect us so much? At least me.. at that moment it does, but shouldn't it make me want to do more? Otherwise we'd be in a state of fear always.. I guess that's where hope comes in..

there's very few moments i've truly reflected, on death or otherwise, but i'd love to return to those moments with all my heart now, but never can. those few times we truly realise the truth in our hearts it hurts, and to think the Sahabah and their like would have felt that a billion trillion times more sincerely and strongly at every moment is unimaginable..

Ya Allah forgive us, and soften our hearts to Your Dhikr, and help us reflect on death, so it may shatter our illusions, cause us to repent from our sins, and draw us closer to YOu, Ya Ar Hamar Raahimeen.

PostSubject: Re: When did you last reflect on DEaTH?   Sat Nov 07, 2009 12:41 pm

Death can bring people coser to Allah and His beautiful deen.
I'm reading this book- 'From MY Sister's Lips' by a Muslim revert talking about how she became muslim, as well as the experiences of her friends, and one of the sisters liked the idea of Islam but never accepted it. But when someone she loved was dying in hospital, he asked her if she believed Islam was the truth, nand when she replied yes, he asked ehr why she didn;t take her shadah. He told ehr to look at him, as he removed the oxygen mask form his face so he could speak to her, and see how weak and ill he was. he was dying. life was so short, and she knew islam was the turth- so what was holding her back? it was only this realisation of death that opened her heart to take the Shahadah.

Likewise, when we reflect on death, it strengthens our iman, and does not allow us to waste time, or be in disobedience, fearing we may die in that state. But for the obedient believer, death is sweet and full of joy, inshaAllah, for they shall be rewarded with seeing the Face of Allh (s.w.t), to enter the beautiful gates if Jannah, to hear their deeds called out, the mountains of light weighing heavey in their Scale, their feet barely touching the Seeraat as they xzoom over the fire with lighting-speed... AS their thirst is quenched frim al-Kauthar, form the hands of al-Habib (s.a.w), and in Jannah they shal have all they desire and more than they could ever dream, for eterntiy. Forever. This is the reward for obedience.

If you are disobedient, however, the solutiin is simple.
1. Look for the root of the problem, the causative.
2. Find and incentive to be obedient and avoid that act of disobedience.
3. Find a solution.

For example, if you talk back to your parnets, look for an incentive not to: eg, to go to Jannah, with so much reward for resoecting your aprnets, loving your motehr more than anyone else after Allah and His Messenger (s.a.w), ect. The soluition might be to send salawaat before you speak, or hold oyur breath when you're about to get angry, or imagine someone you respect is wastching you and think if you would talk back ot oyur parents if they were there. And so on. This struggle againt our nafs is a lifeling one, for as soon as we correct one fault, we must go on to correct all the other ones on our long lists.

THis obediencde increases our iman, but we must also watch the isns of the limbs. This is for inside the home, where once can be obedient, but what about outside it, when you see somehting haraam- eg an uncovered woman- even without the intention or desire to? It lowers your iman, and affects you, makes you less obedient, and thus oyu must repeat hte process all over again. That is why jihadannafs is a lifeling struggle against ourselves, but one we one strive to overcome.

AS an equation, this would be:

Causative + Incentives + Solutions = Obedience = Jannah.

Is it possible for us to ever be as soft hearted as the sahaba (RA) were?

They are such amazing people.. and they were the best, but when the messenger of Allah Sallallahu alayhi wa mentioned death they would cry, genuine tears.

I wonder if we can be like them..

we cannot, but we can strive,
for if we aim for the stars we'll never truly reach them,
but the harder we strive the closer we'll get to our goals...

just take them as your role models, and if you take on even one quality form one sahabah, you'll increase so much inshaAllah due to the power and beauty of their characters.
