Galenus saw a fool hanging on with his hands to the collar of a learned man and insulting him, whereon he said: 'If he were learned he would not have come to this pass with an ignorant man.'

Two wise men do not contend and quarrel
Nor does a scholar fight with a contemptible fellow.
If an ignorant man in his rudeness speaks harshly
An intelligent man tenderly reconciles his heart.
Two pious men keep a hair between them untorn
And so does a mild with a headstrong man.
If however both sides are fools
If there be a chain they will snap it.
An ill-humoured man insulted someone.
He bore it and replied: 'O man of happy issue,
I am worse than thou canst say that I am
Because I know thou art not aware of my faults as I am.

A wise man was once asked: "Which thing is to be hoarded?" He replied: "That thing which will remain with you even if your boat capsizes, that is knowledge."

The Holy Prophet Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said: "If a man seeks the path of acquiring knowledge, Allah guides him to a path leading to Paradise." He said: "Angels spread their wings out of cheer for the seeker of knowledge." He said: "To rise up at dawn and learn a section of knowledge is better for you than to pray one hundred Rak'ats." He said: "If a man learns a chapter of knowledge, it is better than the world and its contents."

Nobody is born learned. Learning is to be acquired. Ibn Abbas Radhiallahu Anhu said: "To discuss about learning in a portion of night is dearer to me than to keep up awake throughout the night in prayer."

Allah advised us to pray thus: "0 Lord, give us good in this world and good in the hereafter - 2: 297. In explaining 'good' in this verse, Hasan Basari Rahimahullah said that it means Knowledge so far as this world is concerned and Paradise so far as the hereafter is concerned.

Imaam Ghazali Rahimahullah

It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of obedience to Allâh, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allâh, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to Al-Masâkin (the poor), and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free, performs As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât), and gives the Zakât, and who fulfill their covenant when they make it, and who are As-Sâbirin (the patient ones, etc.) in extreme poverty and ailment (disease) and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Such are the people of the truth and they are AlMuttaqűn.

On the authority of Bukayr or Abu Bukayr that Ibrahim at-Taymee said:

"The one who is not afflicted with sadness and grief should fear being from the people of the Fire because the people of Paradise will say "All praises and thanks be to Allah, who has removed from us grief" (35:34)

Four things increase wisdom-to give up useless talk, to cleanse the teeth, to keep company with the learned and the pious men.

Four things appertain to divine service-to take steps with ablution, to prolong prostration, to keep attached to the Masjid and to recite the Quran much.

‘There is nobody except that he has someone who loves him and someone who hates him. So if that’s the case, let a person be with the people who are obedient to Allah `azza wa jall!’ (- as they love and hate for the Sake of Allah and they are not unjust)

‘Sincerity is to forget about the creation by constantly looking at the Creator (in terms of gaining admiration for your deeds).

And marry those among you who are single (i.e. a man who has no wife and the woman who has no husband) and (also marry) the Salihun (pious, fit and capable ones) of your (male) slaves and maid-servants (female slaves). If they be poor, Allah will enrich them out of His Bounty. And Allah is All-Sufficent for His creatures' needs, All-Knowing (about the state of the people).

A man said to al-Hasan al-Basri (rahimahullah): ‘The people sit around you so that they may find fault with you!’ So he said, ‘Indeed, I encouraged my soul to aspire for Paradise so it aspired for it. Then I encouraged it to aspire for salvation from Hellfire and so it aspired for it. Then I encouraged it to aspire for salvation from the people, but I didn’t find a way to that. Indeed the people were not pleased with their Creator although He provides for them, so how can they be pleased with another creation like themselves?’
(Al-Bidaya wal-Nihaya 9/318 )

Hudhayfah said: “A time will come upon you where none will be saved except those who supplicate as if they are drowning.”

Ibn Abi Shaybah also reported that Abu Hurayrah said: “There will be a fitnah such that nothing can rescue you from it except to supplicate as if you are drowning.”
